Braces move teeth by applying steady, gentle pressure over time. Small brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth and connected by a thin archwire, and as we adjust that wire over the course of treatment, the teeth follow it into better position and the bite settles into a healthier relationship. It's a proven approach that works for crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, and teeth that came in rotated or blocked out — and it works for a nine-year-old with a mixed set of baby and permanent teeth just as well as it does for an adult who has been thinking about it for twenty years.
We treat both children and adults at our Easley and Greenville offices, and the right starting point looks different depending on age. For younger patients, we're often watching how permanent teeth are erupting and whether there's enough room for them. Sometimes that means a space maintainer to hold a spot after an early tooth loss, or an appliance such as an expander, a Herbst, or the Carriere Motion Appliance to guide jaw growth and bite correction before or alongside braces. For teens, braces frequently go on once most permanent teeth are in. For adults, treatment is about the same biology — teeth respond to pressure at any age — with more attention paid to existing dental work and gum health.
Your first appointment with us is a free initial consultation. We examine the teeth and bite, talk through what's bothering you or what you'd like changed, and explain which options make sense. If braces aren't the only reasonable path, we'll say so; we also offer clear aligners and Invisalign, and some cases can be treated well with either. We also welcome orthodontic transfer patients who started treatment elsewhere and have moved into the Upstate, and we provide retainers for patients who finished treatment with another office.
Metal braces are stainless steel brackets and wires — the most familiar version of orthodontics and still the most widely used. They're strong, they handle complex tooth movement well, and they tend to be the most economical choice. They're a practical fit for children and teens, especially patients who play sports, eat enthusiastically, or simply want something durable. Many younger patients enjoy choosing colored elastic ties at each adjustment visit, which turns a routine appointment into something to look forward to.
Ceramic braces work the same way mechanically but use tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend with natural enamel, making them far less noticeable from a conversational distance. They're a common choice for adults in professional settings and for teens who want a subtler look while still getting the reliability of fixed braces. Ceramic brackets can be slightly more delicate than metal and call for a bit more care with staining foods and drinks — coffee, tea, red sauces — since the clear ties can pick up color between visits. When we compare the two with you, we weigh the complexity of your case, your daily habits, your budget, and how much visibility matters to you.
Living With Braces and Caring for Your Results
Day-to-day life with braces settles into a rhythm quickly. Teeth feel tender for a few days after placement and after some adjustments; soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief usually cover it. Brushing takes longer and flossing requires a threader or similar tool, but keeping brackets and gumlines clean is the single biggest factor in finishing with healthy teeth underneath. Hard, sticky, and chewy foods — ice, hard candy, caramel, whole nuts — are the usual culprits behind broken brackets, and we'll go over the full list with you.
Things do occasionally come loose or poke, and we handle those situations through our emergency care. If you're an athlete, a sports mouth guard protects both your teeth and your appliances. When the braces come off, retainers hold everything in place while the bone and gum tissue stabilize around the new positions. Wearing retainers exactly as directed is how results last, and we'll explain your specific schedule at the time.
Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started
We file insurance claims as a specialist and accept all major PPO plans. We also welcome self-pay and cash patients, accept HSA and FSA funds, and offer flexible financing with affordable payment plans so treatment can be spread out sensibly.
