Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are custom-made plastic trays, worn over the teeth, that apply gentle and specific pressure to shift them into better position. Each tray in the series represents one small step in your plan. You wear one set, your teeth respond, and then you move on to the next. Because the trays are made from your own digital records, they hug the shape of your teeth closely — which is what makes them comfortable and discreet at the same time.

We use aligners for a wide range of concerns: crowding that makes brushing and flossing difficult, spacing that has opened up over the years, teeth that have drifted after a childhood retainer was set aside, and bite issues that need correcting. We also welcome orthodontic transfer patients who started aligner treatment elsewhere and have moved to the Upstate, and we provide retainers for people treated at other practices. Alongside clear aligners we offer Invisalign, traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and appliances such as expanders, the Herbst, and the Carriere Motion Appliance — so if aligners turn out not to be the best fit for your case, there is a straightforward alternative to discuss rather than a dead end.

The most important thing to understand before starting is that aligners only work while they're in your mouth. They are removable, which is the biggest advantage and also the biggest responsibility. Patients who treat wear time seriously — taking trays out for meals and brushing, then putting them right back — tend to move through their series on schedule. Patients who leave them in a napkin at lunch tend to stall. This is an honest conversation we have with every family before treatment begins, especially with teens, because motivation matters as much as the plan itself.

There's also a short adjustment period worth expecting. New trays often feel snug for a day or two, and speech can feel slightly different at first before your tongue adapts. Cleaning habits change a little too: you'll rinse your aligners, brush after meals before reinserting them, and keep a case with you so trays don't get lost or damaged. None of this is difficult, but it's a routine, and knowing that ahead of time makes the first weeks much smoother.
